AMD EPYC™ Gen 2 Processor set benchmarks with its many benefits. VEXXHOST has adopted the tech for our Montreal region. Get to know everything about these revolutionary processors. Read more.
We're excited to talk about the AMD EPYC™ Gen 2 Processor!
Cloud solution professionals are seeing an overwhelming amount of tech options for them to choose from. The rapid growth in technological research and development in recent years has changed the scenario forever, and cloud providers need to stay on top of the game.
There are a large number of configuration options for virtual machines (VMs) available, and companies need to find out the options best suited for them fast so that they can provide the best of services to their clients.
When we look at the processor industry, we can see that AMD is one of the clear leaders. They have revolutionized the market with its avant-garde offerings. AMD's EPYC™ processors made waves when it was released. The 2nd generation recently set benchmarks for the whole industry with one of the highest core-performances, the most potent L3 per cache ratio, and more.
At VEXXHOST, we love the 2nd Gen AMD EPYC™ processors and are already operating with them. We recently announced the addition of this new range of processors into our Montreal region. We believe that this move is a definite boost to our operations in better performance and secure computing. It will also contribute to better workload acceleration, data protection, and infrastructure.
Now you know why we were so excited to talk about this topic.
Let us now look at some of the features of the new generation of processors genuinely epic.
Signature Infinity Architecture
The AMD EPYC™ 2nd Generation processors are designed based on AMD's flagship Infinity Architecture. They set a new standard in the industry with the use of a 7nm process for CPU cores. The hybrid multi-die design of the 7nm processor is an industry-first. Additionally, a 14nm process is set in place for better memory access, I/O and bandwidth, and various security functions.
There is no requirement for several external support chips as such a need is eliminated by the system-on-chip (SoC) design. This design also reduces server design costs and related capital. Despite the number of processor cores, the 'all-in' feature set provides a homogenous group of features.
Accelerated Performance
The AMD EPYC™ 2nd Generation processors provide superior performance features such as up to 64 cores per SoC and 'Zen 2' technology. The processors also surpass the previous generation of processors with enhanced execution pipelines, a shared level 3 cache up to 4x, and better clock rates. These features make the generational performance is one of the best in class with up to 2.3x increase. Compared to the first-gen processors, they also contribute up to a 4x increase in theoretical peak FLOPS (Floating Point Operations per Second).
Now that we see how the second generation processors bring in accelerated performance for data centers let us move on to the primary concern of cloud providers and customers alike - security.
Better Security
All AMD EPYC™processors are equipped with an advanced set of security features, collectively named AMD Infinity Guard. Here is a look at what AMD Infinity Guard includes:
- AMD secure processor
- Secure Memory Encryption (SME)
- Secure Encrypted Visualization (SEV)
Together, these features will process critical data securely and help reduce potential attack surfaces as the software's booting and execution are happening.
