We went to OpenInfra Day North America 2024 and came back with lots of insights on migrating to OpenStack, upgrading environments, and overcoming operational challenges with advanced cloud solutions.

We were proud to be a platinum sponsor at OpenInfra Day North America 2024, held at the IU Indianapolis Campus Center. This event brought together cloud and open-source enthusiasts from across the continent, highlighting the latest in cloud infrastructure, open-source integration, and migration solutions.

We had the opportunity to present four insightful sessions and connect with many OpenStack users. Here's a recap of the event and our key takeaways.

1. Driving Cloud Innovation Through Open-Source Integration

Our CEO, Mohammed Naser, kicked off the event with a keynote on the role of open-source technology in driving cloud innovation. He highlighted how open-source solutions, particularly OpenStack, enable organizations to avoid vendor lock-in, reduce costs, and accelerate innovation.

For teams moving to OpenStack from other platforms like VMware, AWS, or Azure, this keynote emphasized the benefits of open-source integration, making it clear that OpenStack provides the flexibility needed to migrate workloads efficiently. We offer MigrateKit, an open-source tool that simplifies the migration process from proprietary platforms, helping new users overcome the learning curve associated with integrating storage and workloads coming into OpenStack environments.

2. VMware Panel

Later that day, we participated in a panel discussion on transitioning from VMware to OpenStack, addressing common challenges and strategies for a smooth migration. This panel was particularly insightful for teams exploring OpenStack as an alternative to VMware.

The discussion focused on the flexibility OpenStack brings compared to traditional VMware setups. Our managed services were highlighted as a solution for teams facing integration difficulties, offering fully certified Kubernetes environments, seamless integration with block storage using CSI, and robust monitoring tools. These services are designed to ease the transition and reduce operational overhead, making it easier for organizations to scale their OpenStack environments.

3. Building a Future-Proof Cloud Strategy with Atmosphere OpenStack

On the second day, we introduced Atmosphere, our open-source integrated distribution of OpenStack. This talk was aimed at teams looking to either manage or upgrade their current OpenStack environments. Atmosphere simplifies management through tools like OpenStack Helm and integrates robust monitoring systems using Prometheus and Grafana. It supports multi-architecture deployments (x86 and ARM) and provides automation features that make upgrading seamless and efficient.

Often teams tend to lag behind on upgrading to a new release. In comparison, one of the highlights of this talk was Atmosphere’s ability to handle rolling upgrades, ensuring that existing OpenStack environments can be updated without downtime. Not just that, we can perform these upgrades while the environment is running, so there’s no need to pause your production environment. This is particularly beneficial for teams managing complex, large-scale deployments who need to introduce new features and updates without disrupting their services.

For those who want to make their operations smoother and more consistent, Atmosphere also integrates seamlessly with CI/CD pipelines, allowing for faster deployment and efficient scaling as requirements grow. Plus, more automation means less manual work -- teams benefit from a playbook that simplifies spinning up instances in an orderly, consistent manner, ensuring smoother deployments.

4. Open-Source Migration with MigrateKit: Transitioning from VMware to OpenStack

We closed out our presentations with a dedicated session on MigrateKit, focusing on how teams can transition from VMware to OpenStack with minimal disruption. This talk was targeted at teams new to OpenStack who face challenges related to storage integration, workload migration, and maintaining high availability.

MigrateKit is an open-source CLI tool that supports seamless migration, allowing teams to move workloads without the need for extensive manual intervention. The session demonstrated how MigrateKit could ease the process, with flexible options for live migrations and step-by-step guidance to ensure a smooth transition. Our managed Kubernetes service can further simplify this process, offering auto-scaling, self-healing capabilities, and integrated monitoring, which are essential for maintaining robust OpenStack operations.

How We Can Help

  1. For Teams Moving to OpenStack: We understand the challenges of shifting from platforms like VMware, AWS, and Azure. Our solutions, like MigrateKit, ensure a smooth transition with tools that simplify storage integration and workload migration. With our managed Kubernetes services, teams can also benefit from auto-scaling, self-healing, and consistent performance across hybrid environments.
  2. For Teams Upgrading Their OpenStack Environment: Upgrading OpenStack can be complex, but Atmosphere provides the automation and integration needed for a seamless experience. Our tools enable rolling upgrades, multi-architecture support, and continuous monitoring, ensuring that teams can introduce new features without disruptions.
  3. For Teams Facing Operational Challenges: Operating OpenStack at scale requires efficient management. We offer comprehensive managed services that take care of day-to-day operations, allowing teams to focus on their core business. Our fully integrated monitoring and logging tools help detect issues before they become critical, and our expertise in Kubernetes can streamline service deployment, scaling, and recovery.
