3 Kubernetes Certifications Every Cloud Professional Should Know

Mohammed NaserMohammed Naser

Kubernetes certifications are in high demand in the IT industry. Here are three options for cloud computing professionals to choose from. Read more.

Kubernetes certifications play a significant role in equipping companies and professionals with relevant knowledge and skills to adopt containerization technology. With the rise of cloud computing, containers, and the like, K8s (the other name for Kubernetes) is in high demand among industry professionals, including developers, administrators, and other tech enthusiasts.

In this context, we introduce to you three popular Kubernetes certifications offered via the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). Before getting into the three, let us take a brief look at Kubernetes in general.

What is Kubernetes?

Kubernetes (also known as K8s) is a powerful system that is developed by Google for the management of containerized applications in a clustered environment. It is a cluster management tool for Docker containers. Kubernetes aids in scheduling and deploying a large number of container replicas onto a node cluster.

Since it's an open-source model, Kubernetes can run almost anywhere, and all the major players in public cloud providers offer easy ways to utilize this technology. The significant benefits of Kubernetes include its open source nature, portability, scalability, and easy upgrades and updates.

3 Kubernetes Certifications Every Cloud Professional Should Know

Now that we have an understanding of Kubernetes, here are the relevant details of the certifications that will help professionals get better understanding and be experts in the technology.

1. Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)

The objective of CKAD is to certify that the users are capable of designing, building, configuring, and exposing Kubernetes cloud-native applications. Ideally, this certification is for specialized K8s engineers, IT professionals, developers, and other personnel responsible for the above-mentioned tasks.

The CKAD certification has been developed through the combined efforts of the Linux Foundation and the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. The foundations laid the ground for this standardization and Kubernetes certification, intending to expand the K8s ecosystem through proper training to professionals. Successfully certified CKAD professionals can comfortably use cloud-native architectures and concepts, container runtime such as Docker and rkt, and a programming language such as Node.js, Python, Java, etc.

2. Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)

The CKA course and certification are ideal for Kubernetes and cloud administrators, other interested IT professionals who are interested in managing Kubernetes instances. As with CKAD, the certification was created by both Linux Foundation and the CNCF.

A CKA certified administrator is capable of doing a basic installation, configuration, and management of enterprise-grade Kubernetes clusters. Such administrators will be familiar with K8s concepts such as storage, networking, security, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, and more.

3. Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS)

The CKS program and certification come with the prerequisite that the professional must be CKA certified. This step ensures that the professional has all the bases covered to be a security expert. The CKS certification is considered advanced and is conducted in both simulated and real-world Kubernetes environments.

A certified CKS professional has the necessary abilities to secure container applications and Kubernetes platforms during build, deployment, and runtime in a professional environment. This certification's various domains and competencies include cluster set up, cluster hardening, system hardening, minimizing microservice vulnerabilities, supply chain security, and runtime security.
