Migratekit
Developed as part of the broader open-source ecosystem by VEXXHOST, Migratekit is an open-source command-line interface (CLI) tool with a singular focus: expediting and streamlining the migration of virtual machines from VMware to OpenStack environments with minimal service interruption. This tool is the result of a concerted effort to facilitate a migration process where the majority of data transfer occurs without impinging on the virtual machine's operational uptime, thereby reducing the downtime window to the narrowest margin during the final transition phase.
The operational mechanics of Migratekit are structured into two distinct phases, each serving a purpose in the quest for minimal disruption:
Online Data Movement Phase: During this phase, Migratekit proactively transfers data while the virtual machines remain operational. This phase is critical, as it ensures that the bulk of data migration is completed with the virtual machines still running, vastly reducing the need for system downtime.
Cutover Completion Phase: The final phase of the migration process entails a brief, carefully orchestrated downtime window where the remaining data is synchronized. Following this, the virtual machine instances are transitioned from the VMware environment to their new OpenStack setting, which is now ready to operate with all data and settings intact.
