The cloud computing industry is witnessing rising demand for private cloud storage solutions. Ever since enterprises started transitioning from IT infrastructure to cloud, there have been queries about whether companies can have exclusive storage solutions on the cloud.

Private cloud storage is the answer these companies were looking for.

What is Private Cloud Storage?

Private cloud storage or internal cloud storage is a system where data resources from an enterprise are stored within dedicated servers. It offers the same public cloud storage attributes, such as flexibility, scalability, etc. but doesn't use shared servers for data storage. The servers can be hosted in a cloud provider's data center, its own data center, or on-premise at the company.

Internal cloud storage systems usually are single-tenant in nature, but large-scale organizations often have setups allowing multi-tenancy to accommodate different branches or departments.

How Is It Different from Public Cloud Storage?

In public cloud storage, server spaces are allocated and shared across many users/enterprises. Whereas in a private cloud, servers are dedicated to a single user. Companies opt for either storage types based on the level of data security and sensitivity they require.

The usage of dedicated servers makes internal cloud storage a favored option for enterprises looking for more security. This doesn't mean that public clouds are not secure. They are. The exclusivity of private storage allows companies to add their own extra security measures to their servers, which public cloud users cannot.

Who Should Use It?

Private cloud storage indeed comes with all the flexibility and scalability advantages of public cloud, but it is not ideal for every user or data type. There are cases where companies have to keep their data in specific locations to comply with legal, geographical, or security regulations. Private cloud solutions will help them customize their storage accordingly and still harvest the benefits of cloud storage.

Types of Storage Solutions for Deployment

Storage solutions come under many different private cloud services offered by a cloud provider. There are mainly two types of internal cloud storage solutions available for businesses - object-based and block-based.

Object-based storage uses a system that stores data as objects. This storage architecture allows manipulation of such data from applications through programmatic APIs. This type of storage is ideal for companies dealing with huge amounts of unstructured data. An example of an object-based data storage service is the OpenStack project, Swift.

In Block-based storage, data is stored in blocks or volumes. To an OS, such an architecture of data appears as hard drives. Hence, block-based storage is preferred for applications dealing with more structured data systems and files. The OpenStack project, Cinder, is an example of a service providing block-based storage.
