CNCF projects are a testament to the success of open source technologies. For the uninitiated, here is a glance at 15 of its graduated projects.
CNCF projects are a testament to the success of open source technologies, impacting the global operations of many small, medium, and large enterprises. They are built around the aim of sustaining most tech needs outside of bare code management and technical decisions. For the uninitiated, here is a glance at the CNCF and 15 of its graduated projects and what they do.
Cloud-Native Computing Foundation
The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) was established in 2015 with a primary objective to help advance container technology. The CNCF is a sub-foundation and part of the Linux Foundation and was announced alongside the release of Kubernetes 1.0, the cluster manager.
VEXXHOST joined the CNCF as a Silver member in 2018, as we unveiled our Certified Kubernetes service to the public. The opportunity to establish a membership with this instrumental organization has enabled VEXXHOST to support and pursue its aims as a leading open source infrastructure service provider.
The foundation has now evolved and grown a lot over the years. The CNCF has numerous projects under its umbrella, and they are categorized under various maturity levels in ascending order
- Sandbox - early-stage development of projects
- Incubating - still under development and testing processes
- Graduated - enterprise-grade and still evolving with the help of the open source community.
Graduated CNCF Projects
Currently, there are 15 Graduated projects from the foundation. Here is a look at some of the projects that are now transforming open source technology for the world.
1. Containerd
Industry-standard for container runtime. Available in daemon form for both Linux and Windows. Features include OCI image and runtime spec support, container runtime and lifecycle support, image push and pull support, etc.
2. CoreDNS
Coordination and service discovery project able to chain plugins and used in many environments due to its flexibility.
3. Envoy
High-performance edge and service proxy that can make the network transparent to apps.
4. etcd
Distributed key value store - a dependable way to store data across clusters
5. Fluentd
Data collector and logging project allowing users to unify data collection for better consumption.
6. Harbor
Container registry project that is able to make managing containers at scale more effortless and secure.
7. Helm
Package manager, which helps to manage and deploy applications on easily Kubernetes cluster.
8. Jaeger
Distributing tracing system to trace microservice architectures, including distributed context propagation and distributed transaction monitoring, among others.
9. Kubernetes
A framework that helps in automating and managing apps in containerized and clustered environments.
10. Open Policy Agent (OPA)
General-purpose policy engine and language for cloud infra. This project is flexible across the cloud native stack and is a helpful tool for administrators.
11. Prometheus
A leading open source cloud monitoring solution that delivers dimensional data, efficient storage, and outstanding visualization in a simple operation module.
12. Rook
Cloud native storage project that can manage file, block, and object storages using Kubernetes.
13. The Update Framework (TUF)
Creates frameworks to manage security and compliance. Particularly handy in protecting vulnerable software update systems.
14. TiKV
Provides a distributed key value database and is highly scalable with low latency.
15. Vitess
Database clustering system built for horizontal scaling of MySQL with features such as scalability, high performance, manageability, connection pooling, better workflow, and Shard management.
