Building over a decade of support for OpenDev, we're extending our infrastructure contributions to help power the OpenInfra Foundation's websites and backend services.
Open source depends on more than code. Behind every OpenStack release are the systems that make development possible, from code review and automated testing to the compute resources contributors rely on every day.
Keeping those systems operational requires ongoing maintenance and technical expertise.
At VEXXHOST, supporting that work has been part of our involvement in the OpenStack community for years.
We're continuing that commitment with $100,000 in infrastructure credits for 2026–2027 to support the OpenInfra Foundation. This new contribution will provide OpenStack infrastructure for the Foundation's websites and backend systems, separate from the infrastructure we've been contributing to OpenDev since 2016.
For us, it's a practical way to support the ecosystem we've helped build and operate for the past 15 years.
When people think about contributing to an open source project, code is usually the first thing that comes to mind. But developing and maintaining a project the size of OpenStack also requires dependable infrastructure.
Developers need systems to submit and review code, run automated tests, and validate changes before they're merged.
Since 2016, VEXXHOST has contributed infrastructure to OpenDev, the collaborative development platform supporting OpenStack and other open source projects.
Our contributions include:
These resources are particularly important for OpenStack, where testing a code change can involve launching virtual machines, configuring virtual networks, and verifying interactions between multiple services.
Having sufficient compute capacity allows contributors to validate those changes before they become part of a release.
Our team has helped provide that capacity for nearly a decade, working alongside the OpenDev community and other infrastructure contributors.
We previously shared more about this collaboration in OpenInfra Superuser case study on VEXXHOST and OpenDev.
Alongside our ongoing support for OpenDev, we're now providing dedicated infrastructure resources for the OpenInfra Foundation's websites and backend services.
There's something particularly meaningful about this arrangement: the Foundation's web infrastructure will run on the same open source cloud platform developed by the community it supports.
The infrastructure credits will help meet the Foundation's hosting requirements during 2026–2027.
For VEXXHOST, this is an opportunity to apply the same operational expertise we use every day to support infrastructure that serves the wider OpenInfra community.
We've spent years deploying, upgrading, troubleshooting, and maintaining OpenStack environments. Contributing those resources and that experience helps keep the systems behind open source development running.
Our relationship with OpenStack has always gone both ways.
We began running OpenStack in production in 2011, when the project was still in its early releases. Since then, we've worked through major platform changes, evolving customer requirements, and the operational challenges of running cloud infrastructure at scale.
Production experience brings a different perspective to open source development.
Upgrades, networking issues, storage performance, and maintaining reliable services as individual components evolve are challenges that operators encounter regularly.
Working closely with the OpenStack community gives us a better understanding of how the platform evolves, while our experience operating production environments allows us to contribute practical insights back to the project.
That exchange between development and operations has remained an important part of our involvement over the years.
Our founder and CEO, Mohammed Naser, previously chaired the OpenStack Technical Committee and has participated in OpenInfra Foundation governance. In 2019, VEXXHOST received the OpenStack Superuser Award.
These milestones reflect a relationship that extends beyond using OpenStack as a technology platform. We've continued to participate in its development and contribute resources to the infrastructure supporting its community.
We're grateful to the OpenInfra Foundation and OpenDev teams for the collaboration over the years, and we look forward to continuing that work.
We've built much of our business around OpenStack. Helping maintain the infrastructure behind its development is one way we can keep giving back.
