Edge Computing and Truths Behind Its Rapid Advance - Part 2

Mohammed NaserMohammed Naser

Edge computing is growing rapidly in popularity and applications. VEXXHOST finds the truths and trends behind the phenomenon. Read more.

Edge computing is on a steady and fast-paced rise. We have already covered factors such as remote offices, Internet of Things (IoT), AR & VR, AI Analytics, and Automated Objects, contributing to this rise (read Part 1 of Edge Computing Truths).

The other elements governing this growth are digital transformation, 5G technology, digital twins, privacy regulations, and disaster management. Let us see how each of these factors contributes to the ascend of edge technology into the forefront of modern-day computing solutions.

Digital Adaptation and Transformation

Business has changed. The process and operations in which modern businesses are run are have transformed completely. Companies have to be very adaptive to technological advancements; otherwise, they run the risk of stagnation.

This digital transformation can take many forms - examples can be cloud automation, Industrial IoTs, mobility, eCommerce, etc. Edge computing has a wide range of applications in facilitating almost all of these transformation scenarios.

Digital Twins

The term 'digital twin' is used for a digital replica of a living or non-living entity. VR environments based on real places, development prototypes, weather models all can be examples of digital twins.

With the growth of IoT and related technologies, many enterprises create digital twins to showcase their operations. Many digital replicas are updated according to changes in their real counterparts using sensors and small processors. The storage and processing of such data from real objects to their twins are done through edge computing.

Being 5G Ready

5G age is here, and many telecommunications companies are considering or have started offering the services. It also means that their tech and gadgets need to be adapted to the technology. Many companies in the transition phase between 4G and 5G are using edge computing to bridge the gap. With edge computing, companies can reduce the amount of transmitted data via 4G.

Even when the transition is done, edge technology and 5G will work hand-in-hand to enable high amounts of data processing, ensure better application performances, and meet latency targets.

Disaster Management

The destruction caused by natural calamities and other disasters is unpredictable. For instance, no one thought there'd be a pandemic in 2020. Typhoons, wildfires, floods, etc., are also wreaking havoc in the world we live in.

Expert professionals in disaster management are constantly advising organizations to be a step ahead of these unpredictable disasters and have backups for every situation. Many companies have taken heed of this and are storing data in multiple locations - one of the strategies that help them take the load off is storing and processing data on edge networks. This phenomenon is rising and has become a trend contributing to the growth of edge computing.

Privacy Regulations

Several countries and their governments or even government associations (such as EU) have guidelines, restrictions, and mandates on data protection, processing, and storage. Many enterprises have adopted the strategy of using edge computing to deal with the regulations. Storage and processing data on the edges of their network allows the companies to take care of global businesses seamlessly. Another strategy they use is having a unified cloud with data servers in separate countries, called a distributed cloud model.

Edge computing has grown significantly in recent years and is here to stay. Being informed of its applications and implementing the tech where needed can be the difference between being future-ready and hustling to fit in the competitive business world.
